The Rhetoric Program in the Department of English at Carnegie Mellon seeks a specialist in Rhetoric at the rank of tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor beginning August in 2023.
We are looking for a new colleague with outstanding research promise and an emerging record of research in one or some combination of the following subfields: National and/or international rhetorics of race, ethnicity, and decolonization which may include African, Asian, Pacific, Chicanx/Latinx, and/or Indigenous rhetorics.
Candidates whose interests and experience also include professional/technical writing, digital humanities/rhetoric, and new media are strongly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest in teaching in our professional as well as academic programs. Our degree programs include a B.A. in Professional Writing, a B.S. in Technical Writing and Communication, an M.A. in Professional Writing, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Rhetoric. The rhetoric program also contributes courses to the English Department’s B.A. in English.

Ph.D. in hand by the time of the appointment in Rhetoric, Communication Studies, Technical/Professional Communication, Composition Studies, English, Linguistics, or closely related field. We will prefer candidates with a record of research publication, a record of successful teaching relevant to our programs, and interdisciplinary skills appropriate to publishing and teaching in rhetoric and written communication. The Department particularly invites applications from members of under-represented minorities.
Appointment, Rank, and Salary: Nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor position depending on the rank of the candidate at the time of application. The teaching load is two courses each semester (fall/spring).
