English: Assistant Professor in Rhetorics-Technical Writing

The English Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire seeks to hire a specialist in technical writing at the rank of assistant professor. This tenure-track position carries an initial two-year probationary appointment beginning in the 2023-24 academic year with a start date of August 21, 2023.  Final authorization of the position is subject to availability of funding.

Preference will be given to applicants whose research interests, qualifications, and/or experience relate to one or more of the following:

  • Equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice in technical writing
  • Grant and proposal writing
  • Internships and community partnerships
  • Health or science writing
  • Editing and publication management

The preferred candidate will exhibit substantial promise as a scholar and teacher and should underscore in the application letter their capacity as a teacher, advisor, and campus colleague especially as these relate to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The candidate must be committed to making significant contributions to the creative and intellectual life of the department, university, and community. The English Department offers five major emphases at the undergraduate level: creative writing; critical studies in literatures, cultures, and film; English teaching; linguistics; and rhetorics of science, technology, and culture.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned Ph.D. in English, rhetoric, writing studies, technical writing, or closely related field. ABD will be considered, but all requirements for terminal degree must be completed by August 21, 2023.
  • Excellence in teaching writing, technical writing, and rhetoric at the college level
  • A strong record of or potential for publication and/or other scholarly or professional activity in technical writing or related areas
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and/or service.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to mentor students who seek careers in technical writing, professional writing, or publishing
  • Professional experience in technical writing, science writing, professional writing, grant writing, or editing and publishing
  • Experience or interest in interdisciplinary collaborations

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will develop and teach 300- and 400-level courses in the department’s rhetorics emphasis as well as teach courses in our award-winning Blugold Seminar. Rhetorics courses might include a rotation among Technical Writing, Science Writing, Grant Writing, and Editing and Publications Management, the senior capstone course, or others in the rhetorics emphasis. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach courses as appropriate to their areas of expertise in other areas of English. The teaching load is typically 3-3 (11 credit hours per semester), including the Blugold Seminar (a 5-credit introductory, rhetoric-based first-year writing course), and two courses in the rhetorics emphasis. All department members also participate in scholarly and creative research activities and engage in service to the department, college, and university.
